Chapter 4

Koh could taste the sky on Adam's tongue. He forgot about the cold. He forgot about his fear and the danger of the swaying ladder rungs. He gave everything he had into that kiss. He'd waited so long for it and, as he pressed himself into Adam's body, the sensation was everything the teenaged Koh had yearned for and dreamed of. Hard, yet willing, strong, yet warm. Adam held him, neither man moving from the other until a light flashed across their eyes.

Another pair of hikers was coming back from the top. The young couple grinned at them as they tore back down the stairway.

"We've still got a long way to go, don't we?" Adam asked, his arms still around Koh. His playful smile seemed to indicate he really didn't expect them to say no.

"Oui. Joyeux Noël," the girl called over her shoulder.

"Mele Kalikimaka!" Koh and Adam responded.

"Mele Kalikimaka!" the couple shouted happily. Koh could no longer see them, but could hear the footsteps of the young French tourists.

"They're practically running down the stairs." Adam seemed shocked. "Are we going to let a couple of kids outdo us, Koh?"

"I was kinda hoping we would."

Adam laughed. Dang. Koh had forgotten about the man's competitive streak. He pocketed his own flashlight, no longer needing it. Adam moved up the stairs again, holding Koh's free hand. They took their time, frequently pausing for water or for a kiss. When they made it to the top, neither man could speak.

"When I'm up here," Adam said, when he'd adjusted to the high altitude enough to speak, "I feel my brother."

"Oh, Adam." Koh put his arms around the man who looked as broken in that moment as Koh often felt.

Adam said nothing. He let Koh hold him, then pushed himself away, looking down on their island home, awakening at last to a beautiful morning. The view from here was like none Koh had ever seen. He began to fall in love with Oahu all over again.

"Do you know the story of how Christmas came to Hawaii?" Adam asked.

"I think so. It was one of the first great explorers who introduced the idea. George Vancouver, wasn't it?"

Adam nodded, his face glistening with cold and excitement. In their gargantuan effort to climb to the top of the mountain, clouds settled on them like second, freezing skins.

"Look at these trees. Spruces. Most people still don't know that Hawaii has so many European trees. Christmas is always here," Adam said. "It's here every day, if you only know where to look for it. Vancouver wanted to introduce the idea of a special day to celebrate being alive. Lately, the only time I feel that way is when I'm up here. With a few more steps I could touch Yori. I could see him and hug him and tell him how much I miss him."

He suddenly dropped his face into his hands. "I even went to a kahuna, a healer. I asked him if my brother was okay. Okay?" He lifted his face, the grief, the trauma so evident in his exquisite features.
